What does the Lord Require of Us ?
How often do you spend time thinking about or understanding what God requires of us ? Do you even know ? Do you spend time in His word truly getting to know Him ?
For many of us, knowing about God was all we have ever truly accomplished in our Christian lives. We go to church to get our weekly one hour of hearing God’s word, make a gift, and believe that we can call ourselves Christians. There are 168 hours available in a week, less whatever sleep time we can squeeze in. We then go about living the rest of the week (167 hours, less sleep time) with no additional time spent or thought given to the Lord. Psalm 31:14 “ I trust in you Lord, for you are my God. My times are in your hands.”
There are just too many other more important things to get done here in this world trying to survive the challenges of daily living. Working, shopping, caring for kids, going to school, time with friends and time on social media. There just doesn’t seem to be any time left over to turn to the one and only person who can bring about what truly matters in your life. For as Jesus said in John 8:32 “ Know the truth and the truth will set you free.” ( from the book “Finding Calm in the Storm of Everyday Living”)
Now in speaking of truth let us hear what God himself said in Deuteronomy 10:12 “ What does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and His statutes which I command you today for your good.”
Does this not speak to your heart and soul and give you a greater understanding on what God requires from us ? To fear him – to walk in His ways – to love Him – to serve Him – to keep His commandments- for our own good. To fear the Lord is to hate evil and to be in reverent awe of His hallowed name.
King Solomon, the greatest wise man in all of History, concluded His words of wisdom and truth In Ecclesiastes 12:13,14 “ Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgement, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.”
Jesus Christ himself said in John 14:15 “ If you love Me, obey My commands.” vs 21 “ He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me.” vs 23 “ all who love Me will do what I say.” and in John 15:9 “ When you obey My commandments, you remain in My love, just as I obey My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.”
Obeying God and Loving Him is all that is required. My friends, God’s greatest desire is to have you in a loving personal relationship with Him. The only way for this to happen is to spend time with Him in prayer and reading His words of truth.
