What it Means to Fulfill Prophesy ?
Matthew 5:17,18 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets, I did not come to destroy but to fulfill, v18 For assuredly I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.”
The very words of Jesus Christ, Himself, at the start of His earthly ministry and to save the world from hell, destruction and death. The entire bible is the story of Jesus Christ and how He came into the world as a loving sacrifice to redeem and save mankind from the evil grips of Satan’s wickedness of turning people away from God.
How well do you understand the word Prophesy or what it truly means ? While most have a good idea what it means, few pay any attention to it nor consider it relevant today. Prophesy was written throughout all of scripture by many people called and divinely chosen by God to speak on His behalf.
Prophesy not only is and was predictive in content but also written for the purposes of glorifying and exalting God’s divine power and sovereignty over all of His creation. Prophesy speaks of the knowledge, truth and wisdom of God’s divine character and the need for all mankind to come into a faithful reverence and obedience to His will and to His ways.
God’s divine grand plan of salvation and the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was repeatedly prophesied and written to provide hope for mankind’s spiritual depravity and our desperate need to be saved from the sinful, evil, desires and corruption in this world. All people are in need of hearing the Gospel of salvation.
While there is much prophesy written we will focus on just these few verses of predictive prophesy found in Isaiah. Referring back to what Jesus said above in Matthew 5:18 “ For assuredly I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” Make no mistake about it, what is prophesied by God’s divine word will be fulfilled and will in fact happen as He says it will.
Speaking to the people of Israel in Isaiah 60:15-19 “Whereas you have been forsaken and hated, so that no one went through you, I will make you an eternal excellence, A joy of many generations. v16b You shall know that I, the Lord, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob. v17 I will make your officers peace, and your magistrates righteousness. v18 Violence shall no longer be heard in your land, Neither wasting nor destruction within your borders; But you shall call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise. v19 Your sun shall no longer be your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be to you an everlasting light.” (See below revelation 21:23,24 ; 22:5)
The prophet Isaiah foretelling of the future, beautiful promises of God about the new earth and the coming everlasting Kingdom of Heaven. This prophesy was told 2700 years ago and is not yet fulfilled. Revelation 21:23,24 “ The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.” v24 “ And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.” Revelation 22:5 “ There shall be no night there; they need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.”
Then we see and read the prophesy of Jesus’ coming found in Isaiah 61:1,2 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; v2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God.”
These are the very words of Jesus Christ found in Luke 4:18,19 as He read to the people in the synagogue, at the start of His earthly ministry. Jesus added “And recovery of sight to the blind and to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” And the day of vengeance of our God was omitted.
After saying these words He closed the book of Isaiah and said to them in Luke 4:21 “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Again this was prophesied by Isaiah 700 years prior to Jesus’ coming into the world and then repeated to the people as He read from the book of Isaiah. Then Jesus made the astonishing statement that He has fulfilled this prophesy. Can you imagine how shocked these people were to hear the implied proclaimed message that- I am Jesus Christ in the flesh who is speaking to you today. (emphasis mine)
Initially they marveled at what He said and listened to Him in v 23-27 but after hearing those additional words they soon were filled with wrath and rose up to throw Him out of the city and led Him to a cliff where they wanted to throw Him over it. Luke 23-30
This was early in the three-year ministry that Jesus spoke, taught and preached to the people and performed many miracles and healed many of the sick and the lame. The words spoken to us in all of scripture are the inerrant divine truth and reveal to us what God wants us to hear and know about the hope of His calling and the faithful promises of eternal life.
One must read the Old Testament with all its prophesy from Genesis to Revelation to know and give you a deeper understanding of the redemptive history of the Bible. Without that knowledge and awareness you miss a great deal of the divine message enabling you to grow stronger in your faith.
