Preeminence of Christ
In the book of Colossians 1 the apostle Paul writes to the church of Colossae. Paul’s message and purpose was to show how Jesus Christ should be first and foremost in the minds of believers. Christ’s supremacy and preeminence is above all things and His followers should reflect that love on a daily basis. Paul exhorts followers of Christ with sound wisdom and truth and is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago.
Colossians 1:3-5 “We give thanks to the God our Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, always praying for you, since we heard of your faith in Jesus Christ and of your love for all the saints; because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel.”
Giving thanks – Always praying – Faithful – Loving – Hope of eternity – Believing in the truth of the gospel Powerful words of encouragement and inspiration on what it takes as a believer to continue growing in one’s daily walk with the Lord. Are you doing this on a daily basis to keep your heart and mind on Christ ?
v6 “Which has come to you, as it has in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth.”
Does hearing the good news of the gospel fill your heart with love and grace ? Are you sharing your love of Christ with others ? Do you spend time reading scripture and allowing God to speak to you through His words ?
v9 “For this reason we pray that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; Again we see how and why prayer and knowledge is essential to become a true follower of Christ. We pray that all people may be filled with the knowledge of God, which is readily available by reading scripture. Are you doing this ?
You cannot possibly know God if you are not reading His words of truth. If reading the gospel is difficult for you, you must pray and ask God for spiritual wisdom and understanding. If you are willing to spend time in His word, He most certainly will provide the spiritual understanding. Are you willing to learn and grow ? If so, we read the following; THAT YOU MAY [ and then paraphrasing the rest of v10-11]
“ That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him ”
That you may “ be fruitful in every good work ”
That you may ” Increase in the knowledge of God ”
That you may be “strengthened with might, according to His glorious power
“ For all patience and longsuffering with joy ”
Colossians 1:12-15 “ We give thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. v13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love. v14 In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. v15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
As true believers in faith - We thank God- To be partakers of our divine inheritance with the saints – Who as delivered us from the darkness of evil – Into the light of the kingdom of heaven – He has redeemed us with the blood of Christ – Who was the firstborn over all of creation.
Colossians 1:16-18 “ For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. v17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. v18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning , the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the PREEMINENCE
By Him [Jesus Christ] All things were created – Through Him and For Him – He is before All things – In Him all things consist. Not some things but ALL THINGS.
John 1:1-4 “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
