The Prayer of Daniel
The prophet Daniel was an exile taken captive by the Babylonian empire during Jerusalem’s destruction. He was a young man taken from a noble family and selected to become a servant of the first of several kings from both the Babylonia empire and the Medo-Persian empire. Daniel was a very faithful man who worshipped God and had the gift of prophetic visions and interpreted dreams of several Kings who were troubled and restless in their spirit. Daniel gives the most accurate account in the old testament of the apocalyptic visions in Chapters 7 to 12
The prayer of Daniel as found in Chapter nine is one that not only depicts the sorrows, pain and suffering with the decimation and desolation of Israel , but can be as easily applied to us living in this present age. I will be using the NKJV and will not write it in its entirety but want to emphasis these truths to us today. Keep in mind this was written over 2600 years ago and perhaps many will say it doesn’t apply to us, but read with an open mind and an open heart, because the truth is -- it does apply to us today and forever.
Daniel is confessing the sins of his nation and pouring out his heart and soul, making supplications and requests of God through prayer. We all know the chaos, confusion and the plague that has affected this entire nation, and the political divide and hatred so prevalent in our society. I encourage all to just let God speak to us as we read these words of truth.
Daniel 9:4 “ O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, v5 We have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgements,”
v7 “ O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is to this day – to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and far because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You.”
v9 “ To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him. v10 We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets.”
v13 “ As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth. v14 Therefore the Lord has kept this disaster in mind, and brought it on us; for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works which He does, though we have not obeyed His voice. And in the last sentence in v15 “ we have sinned, we have done wickedly ! “ (See and read Deuteronomy 28 for the blessings and the curses of mankind)
v19 “ O Lord, hear ! O Lord, forgive ! O Lord, listen and act ! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city[nation] and Your people are called by Your name.” (emphasis mine)
One must wonder if what we are experiencing now in this country and around the world, with the covid-19, is that God is sending the world a message. The secular worldview continues to abandon God and refuses to accept the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. God is sovereign and in control of how the world functions, and there is no nation who can suppress the almighty power of God and His plan of salvation to the end of days.
God is Life – God is Spirit – God is Truth – God is Love – God is Peace
Start today – Don’t delay and change your life - Let the power of God’s words speak to you and be filled with a peace and joy beyond measure.
