Psalm 119 - Seven Words of Excellence in Meditation and Prayer
The book of Psalms is the longest book in the Bible and Psalm 119 is the longest psalm. In that chapter alone are the following seven words that are slso scattered throughout all of the Bible. Many times while reading scripture we come across words that we may not always know what they mean.
The words found in Psalm 119 are: statutes – commandments – laws – precepts – judgements – word - testimonies. These seven words are repeated or mentioned 151 times by the psalmist. While each word itself has a slightly different meaning, they all mean to follow and obey God’s holy words of truth as written throughout all of scripture.
The psalmist is pouring out his heart and soul during times of great anguish and is sharing his devotion and obedience in faith regarding his circumstances. It’s a beautiful and powerful way of expressing our love and commitment to God through meditation and prayer.
Here are several verses in Psalm 119 that use all seven words.
v13-16 With my lips I have declared all the judgements of Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies. I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways. I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget (but remember) Your word. (emphasis mine)
v18,19 Open my eyes, that I may see Wonderous things from Your law, Do not hide Your commandments from me.
Powerful action words spoken to strengthen our faith and love of Christ. I will declare - rejoice- meditate - contemplate – delight - remember
