On Fire For Christ
Oh, how a little flame can ignite such a huge fire ! James 3: 5 " See how great a forest a little fire kindles."
I am going to share a little story of my life from many years ago. To the best of my ability I may not have the ages quite accurate, but the story is in fact one of truth. My cousin, Dennis, and I lived only a few houses away from one another in Cozad, NE. I was around 9 years of age and he was 8 years old. Mind you this was around 1960. Just a few years back !!!
It so happened on that day, sometime in the early fall, Dennis and I were together walking down the alley behind our houses and we spotted a toliet seat along with a book of matches. Back then people had barrels in the alley and trash was burned. In my creative little mind, I thought what a great idea it would be if we could build a little fire inside of that toilet seat ?
Even more perfect was the empty lot, which had dead, dried, fireweeds about five feet high – what a great place to build our little fire. We could just hide in there so no one could see what we were doing. Oh, we were so excited ! We gathered up some papers, cardboard and a few sticks. Parted the dry weeds and went into this jungle a few yards- eager with our anticipated plans
We placed everything we had inside the toilet seat, lit this little fire, and within seconds our little flame ignited those great big, dry fireweeds. WHOOSH ! Oh my, two little boys rushing out of there at breakneck speed, hearts pounding rapidly and plum scared to death. I mean what were we to do !!
Within minutes the whole lot was engulfed with flames - we heard the sirens - by the time the fire trucks arrived the jungle of fireweeds was gone, charred black to the ground. Still a few flames to put out and protect the house right next to the lot. Neighbors all out to check on things and find out what happened. All this flurry of activity that two little boys caused that day. In the end, I received a well deserved spanking all the way back down that alley. We can laugh and still talk about it today. Not too much laughing from those two little boys back in 1960.
While there are many lessons to be learned here -the one that now stands out for me is this. What we least expect to happen or don’t ever think could or would happen - can and will happen when spending time in the word of God.
As a non- believer, for over 53 years, I was grieving over the loss of my wife back on November 30,2015, and made a commitment to myself to start reading her devotional books to try and find comfort with my breaking heart. I did this for over 15 months on a daily basis, and while driving my truck in Wisconsin, just like any other ordinary day, it happened. WHOOSH I felt God’s presence, and by grace, He filled my heart with a love unknown to me and I became alive with the Holy Spirit. Words cannot adequately describe or express my total astonishment on that day. ( Explained in more detail in my book “Finding Calm in the Storm of Everyday Living “)
My friends do not ever give up or lose hope with what the power of the Holy Spirit can do. Many of us want to believe but just aren’t quite willing or ready to totally accept and receive God into our lives. Spend time in His words on a daily basis and be enlightened and encouraged with His love, truth and mercy Philippians 2: 13 “ For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
Start today and change your life - Let the words of God speak to You and be filled with peace and joy beyond measure. Let a little flame ignite a fire for CHRIST in your heart, mind and soul !
