Follow Me - The Call of Jesus Christ
Matthew 9:9 “ Jesus saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him Follow Me. So he arose and followed Him.” (emphasis mine) Through out all of scripture we see how amazing the power of God’s words can be - Follow Me – only two words spoken to Matthew, and without any hesitation, beyond any shadow or doubt, nor any questions asked, he arose and obeyed Jesus’ call to him.
How many of us are doing this ? Do we allow these all powerful words to fill our hearts and inner being by responding to Christ, like these men did 2000 years ago ?
Prior to that Jesus had called Peter, and his brother Andrew in Matt. 4:19 with the same all powerful words “ Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” James and John were also called and all four of these men immediately, beyond any doubt, nor questions asked, left their fishing nets, and followed Him.
These men, Jesus called to be His disciples were common men just like you and I. They were men of modest means, nothing special, not well known and considered the lower working class in that day. One can only imagine the aura and the commanding presence of Jesus Christ walking among the people and to see the response of these men drawn to Him.
Truly, in this day and age are you and I willing to completely surrender our lives to living for and through Christ and obey His command [Follow Me] ? Some are, many won’t or aren’t willing to make that sacrifice or commitment.
As Jesus said in Matthew 7:13,14 “ Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” My friends are you responding to Christ’s loving call to enter by the narrow gate ? Do you wholeheartedly trust in Him, love Him and believe in Him ?
In Matthew 8:5-13, we read about a Roman centurion[officer] who came to Jesus, and pleaded with Him to heal his servant who was paralyzed and suffering and Jesus said “ I will come and heal him.” and the centurion said, Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.
This man believed that just by the power of Jesus’ word his servant could be healed. He went on to explain in v9 that he too was a man under authority, having soldiers under him. And I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it.”
When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who were following Him in v10 “ Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel.” And in v13 Jesus said to the centurion, “ Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed in that hour.
A Roman centurion understood Jesus’ authority, His sovereignty and the power of His words. He understood the discipline[obedience] of his soldiers to follow and obey the commands that he gave to his soldiers just like Jesus expects His faithful followers and believers to obey Him.
Is your faith and understanding of God's authority and sovereignty established in your heart, mind and soul ? Have you responded to Christ's call to Go - Come -Do - Follow Me ?
