Jesus’ Promise and the Work of the Holy Spirit.
We read in John 14 thru 16 the great promises made to the disciples and to us concerning the power of the Holy Spirit and the great work that would be done through us who are true followers and believers in Jesus Christ.
We start with Jesus himself telling us in John 14:12 “Truly, truly, I say to you whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. “ He is telling us that with the indwelling Spirit we would be effective witnesses to the world and bring many to salvation because of the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling and working within us. (see Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4)
Jesus goes on to say in John 14:15-17 “ If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. v16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever. v17 Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. “ Do you truly love Christ and are you keeping His commandments ? Have you accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your savior and has the Holy Spirit filled your heart with His love, truth, peace and grace ? Do you know Him and spend time with Him in prayer and reading scripture ?
Jesus again asks and says in John 14:23 “ If anyone loves Me he will keep My word and My Father will love Him and He will come to him and make our home with Him. By loving Him and obeying His word the greatest precious promise and the divine power of God and the Holy Spirit will be with us always and forever.
We begin to see what the Holy Spirit will do for us as Jesus says in John 14:26 “ But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” It is the Holy Spirit that teaches us, guides us, empowers us, enables us and instructs us on how to live our lives through Him, for Him, and with Him in all that we do. So amazing is the peace and the joy that living in the presence of Christ brings to one’s life.
For as Jesus assures us with this truth and His precious promise in v27 “ Peace I leave with you, peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” The only true peace is found in Christ Jesus and cannot be found in this world. Has Christ filled your heart with truth, peace and grace ? If not spend time daily in prayer and in God’s word and discover the riches and the true meaning of life.
“ When the helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, Who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about Me.” The words of truth spoken by Jesus in John 15:26 on how the Spirit fills our hearts with truth, giving us the power to effectively be a witness to the rest of the world. This is the faithful promise God makes to all mankind and the need for all humans to turn to the Gospel of Christ and be saved from the wicked, corrupt, evil ways of the world.
Jesus tells us in John 16:8 what the Holy Spirit will do and does “ And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgement; v9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; v10 “ concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see Me no longer; v11 concerning judgement, because the ruler of this world[Satan} is judged.
As true followers of Christ we come to understand how we are all sinners by nature and fall woefully short of meeting the righteousness, goodness and holiness of God who is perfect and pure. (see Romans 3:9-19) We also know that the only way to eternal paradise is through faith in Jesus Christ who died a death that we(you,I) deserve to have.
The Apostle Paul says it best in Ephesians 2:4,5 “ But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved.” It is the Holy Spirit, who God has poured into our hearts through faith with a sincere, wholehearted belief in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
We must remember that Faith is not a onetime act, but a way of life. The true believer, declared righteous by God, will persevere as a pattern of living through love, obedience, and reverence for God. God’s gracious gift of salvation does not free us from the requirement for faithful obedience. All must give account for how they have lived.
